Canon 3D Prototype
There have been multiple sightings of a Canon 3D prototype! We heard from a few sources that Canon is working on 2 cameras to replace the current Canon 5D. In an earlier post, Canon 5D Mark II delayed, we reasoned the delay of the replacement.
It is a well-known fact that Canon had a huge success with the Canon 5D. The 5D’s sensor is a gem and with some minor tweaks it is possible to bump up the resolution to 14 megapixels. People would not mind if they left it at 12 megapixels. To keep the costs down, they can use the current 5D’s body with some minor touch-ups.
As will all prototypes, they may pull the plug at the last moment – it may never see the light of the day. But we have reasons to believe that this will arrive, soon. It may be a surprise announcement in Photokina 2008 – would make a great stocking stuffer. The price we heard was $1999. This would put it in direct competition with the Nikon D300. The Nikon D300 may shed a few hundred dollars over the holiday season. But, we think, the Canon 3D will be a huge hit with serious amateurs – who are not too crazy after the megapixels and want a smaller package.
And, Canon cannot discount the other giant, Sony. Sony will be releasing at least one full-frame camera in 2008. You may even hear Sony full-frame announcements in PMA 2008. Just a few more days before Canon shows the cards in PMA 2008…
