Nikon 16-85 VR chatter gets louder
More and more reports seem to confirm that the Nikon 16-85 VR is real and will be announced in PMA 2008. Some sources seem the hint that the magic date is a few days before January 31, 2008.
The price of the popular Nikon 18-200 VR keeps dropping. It used be selling for around $800 and was perennielly in short supply. Today it is listed in B&H for $699 and Adorama lists it for $680 - and it is available. Though the Nikon 16-85 VR is not a direct replacement for the Nikon 18-200 VR, this is just one more signal of an imminent announcement.
The Nikon 16-85 VR should be sweetly priced at $300 and will be only available as a kit with the rumored Nikon D60.
Stay tuned…
How can it be “priced at $300″ AND “only available as a kit with the rumored Nikon D60″???
Good question. The answer is “initially”. It is probably a marketing move to simulate demand for the lens - something that has been done by Nikon with other products. This would force some users to buy the new camera or upgrade to it for this nice lens. After about 3-6 months you should see be able to buy this lens by itself. Of course all of this is hearsay and you should take it with a big grain of salt
It seems like this lens is going to be sold independently from the very beginning. And, the cost of the lens is more likely to be around $400.
