Nikon 16-85 VR chatter gets louder

More and more reports seem to confirm that the Nikon 16-85 VR is real and will be announced in PMA 2008. Some sources seem the hint that the magic date is a few days before January 31, 2008.

The price of the popular Nikon 18-200 VR keeps dropping. It used be selling for around $800 and was perennielly in short supply. Today it is listed in B&H for $699 and Adorama lists it for $680 - and it is available. Though the Nikon 16-85 VR is not a direct replacement for the Nikon 18-200 VR, this is just one more signal of an imminent announcement.

The Nikon 16-85 VR should be sweetly priced at $300 and will be only available as a kit with the rumored Nikon D60.

Stay tuned…

  1. How can it be “priced at $300″ AND “only available as a kit with the rumored Nikon D60″???

  2. Good question. The answer is “initially”. It is probably a marketing move to simulate demand for the lens - something that has been done by Nikon with other products. This would force some users to buy the new camera or upgrade to it for this nice lens. After about 3-6 months you should see be able to buy this lens by itself. Of course all of this is hearsay and you should take it with a big grain of salt :-)

  3. It seems like this lens is going to be sold independently from the very beginning. And, the cost of the lens is more likely to be around $400.
